North Island to South Island New Zealand: Fly or Take the Ferry?

Should you fly from Auckland to Christchurch, or drive to Wellington and take the Cook Strait ferry to Picton? Can a rental car travel on the ferry? What happens when you have rods, waders and other bulky gear?

This guide compares the practical options for travelling between New Zealand’s two main islands, including flights, ferries, rental-car rules, baggage and a budget relocation-car alternative.

Flight vs ferry: at-a-glance comparison

The sailing time can make the ferry look almost as fast as flying, but that is misleading if you begin in Auckland. You must first reach Wellington, check in at the ferry terminal and then continue from Picton. Treat it as a road-trip route, not simply as an alternative Auckland–Christchurch transfer.

Option 1: fly from the North Island to the South Island

The most straightforward route for many visitors is Auckland Airport (AKL) to Christchurch Airport (CHC). The flight itself is typically around 1 hour 25 minutes, although schedules and journey times vary.

Christchurch is a practical starting point for the central and southern South Island. Depending on the current schedule, direct domestic routes may also connect Auckland or Wellington with Queenstown and other South Island airports.

Why flying worked for my fishing trip

I originally hoped to use a relocation car and continue overland, but no available vehicle matched my dates and route. Instead, I returned my North Island rental car in Auckland and flew Jetstar to Christchurch, where I started the South Island section separately.

Driving from Auckland to Wellington would have used most of a day before the ferry crossing even began. Flying gave me more time for trout fishing and reduced the number of long driving days.

Flight baggage: compare the real total

Low base fares can become less attractive once you add a checked bag, rod case or other oversized equipment. Compare the complete booking—not just the headline ticket price.

Fishing rods, sporting goods and awkward items may need to travel as checked or oversized baggage. Check the airline’s current packaging, length, weight and restricted-item rules before buying the fare.

Option 2: take the Wellington–Picton ferry

The inter-island ferry route runs between Wellington at the southern end of the North Island and Picton at the top of the South Island. The two principal operators are Interislander and Bluebridge.

The crossing is more than transportation. It leaves Wellington Harbour, crosses Cook Strait and enters the sheltered Marlborough Sounds before arriving in Picton. For a slower road trip, it can be one of the memorable parts of the journey.

Allow at least half a day

The scheduled sailing is usually around 3.5 hours, but both ferry operators require passengers to be checked in one hour before departure. Add the journey to the terminal, boarding, unloading and onward travel from Picton. Cook Strait services can also be delayed or cancelled, so avoid a tight same-day connection with a flight or non-refundable activity.

Ferry fares are dynamic

There is no single reliable fare to publish for every traveller. Prices vary by sailing, fare flexibility, passenger age, vehicle length and height, trailer, cabin and season. Search both operators using the same date and exact vehicle dimensions, then compare the change and cancellation terms—not only the cheapest total.

I initially booked a ferry but later changed my rental-car plan and paid a cancellation fee. If your itinerary is still flexible, a changeable or refundable fare may be worth the extra cost.

Foot-passenger baggage

Interislander currently allows foot passengers to check two bags of up to 23 kg each. Large items, including backpacks, must be checked, while the carry-on allowance is one small bag plus a handbag or laptop bag. Check the latest rules for your operator if travelling with a rod tube or unusually shaped gear.

Can you take a rental car on the ferry?

Sometimes—but never assume that all rental vehicles can cross Cook Strait. The ferry operator may accept the vehicle type while the rental company’s contract prohibits the crossing.

Policies can change and may depend on the vehicle or rate. Before confirming a rental, ask:

• Is this exact vehicle permitted on Interislander or Bluebridge?
• Do I book the vehicle space myself?
• Will insurance and roadside assistance remain valid during the crossing?
• Must I return the car in Wellington and collect another in Picton?
• Are one-way or multi-island fees included?
• What happens if the ferry is delayed or cancelled?

Budget option: relocation cars through Transfercar

Transfercar connects travellers with rental companies that need vehicles moved between locations. Eligible relocation cars and campervans may be offered from NZ$1 per day or at another heavily discounted rate.

The trade-off is flexibility. Each listing has fixed pickup and return locations, a limited number of days, mileage and its own insurance, fuel and ferry conditions. You request a vehicle, and the rental operator must accept the request. It works best when your schedule can follow the relocation rather than the other way around.

Travelling without a car from Picton

If you cross as a foot passenger, Picton is not the end of your options. Coaches connect the region, and the Coastal Pacific scenic train runs between Picton and Christchurch during its operating season.

The train is seasonal rather than a year-round daily service. Great Journeys New Zealand recommends advance booking and does not guarantee space for walk-on passengers when fully booked. Confirm that the train operates on your exact date before building the ferry connection around it.

Essential rule for anglers: Check Clean Dry

When moving rods, waders, boots, nets or any equipment that has touched freshwater, transport is not the only issue. New Zealand requires water users to prevent the spread of invasive freshwater pests.

For my own fishing-focused itinerary, flying from Auckland to Christchurch was the right decision because it protected time on the water. For a slower road trip that already reaches Wellington, the ferry offers a much richer journey than a simple transfer.

Choose the route by comparing the entire journey: ground travel, check-in, baggage, vehicle permission, cancellation flexibility and the time you want at your destination. That will give you a far more useful answer than comparing only the flight time and ferry sailing time.
