Hi, I’m Yagi! I just got back from a trip through the Tohoku region. Three days packed with Kitakata ramen, stream fishing, and a hot spring soak — a seriously dense little getaway.

“I want to visit Tohoku but I can’t decide what to do.” “I want the food, the experiences, and the hot springs, all in one trip!” — if that sounds like you, I’ve put together a 2-night, 3-day Tohoku road trip model course based on a trip I actually took.

It starts with a bowl of ramen in Kitakata, Fukushima, moves on to stream fishing in Yamagata’s Arakawa river system, and wraps up on the final day with local Yamagata food and a relaxing natural hot spring. This course is a perfect match if you’re an outdoors person who also refuses to compromise on good food.

What This Guide Covers

  • The bowl to order at Raimu, a beloved Kitakata ramen shop
  • Stream fishing in Yamagata’s Arakawa river system (beginner-friendly)
  • The jaw-dropping value at Debuya Shokudo, Yamagata’s one-coin diner
  • The natural hot spring “Hanakasa no Yu” at Super Hotel Yamagata
  • A full cost estimate for the 3-day trip (per person)

Day 1: Starting the Trip with Kitakata Ramen

The first stop of the trip was Kitakata, a city in Fukushima Prefecture. Kitakata ramen is one of Japan’s “big three” ramen styles, alongside Sapporo and Hakata, and it’s woven so deeply into local life that Kitakata even has its own “morning ramen” culture. Out of everywhere in town, I chose Raimu, a shop that has kept the same flavor since it first opened.

Raimu’s Three Signature Touches

Kitakata ramen is known for its aged, high-hydration noodles and a clear, soy-sauce-based broth. At Raimu, that formula gets pushed even further with its own set of signature touches.

  1. Noodles: Smooth, chewy, aged high-hydration noodles. The texture right after boiling is something else.
  2. Chashu: Prepared over three days and aged for several more months — a real showpiece. Every bite delivers more depth.
  3. Broth: A golden broth built from pork bone, chicken bone, vegetables, dried sardines, and kelp. It’s light and rich at the same time, which almost feels like a contradiction.

I ordered the shoyu chashu ramen. The moment I took the first sip of broth, I thought, “so this is the taste of Tohoku.”

After the ramen, I took a slow walk through Kitakata’s storehouse district. The quiet backstreets lined with old sake breweries and miso warehouses had that calm, understated Tohoku atmosphere — a perfect way to start the trip. From there I headed to Yamagata to get ready for the next day’s stream fishing.

Day 2: Stream Fishing in Yamagata’s Arakawa River System

Day two was the main event: stream fishing in Yamagata. I headed to the Arakawa river system, an area managed by the Oguni Town Fisheries Cooperative and home to Iwana (char) and Yamame (trout) in clear mountain water.

🎣 Stream Fishing Basics Every Beginner Should Know

Stream fishing can look like it has a high barrier to entry, but with the right prep, even beginners can enjoy it. I’m not particularly experienced with stream fishing myself, and it was no problem at all.

  • Fishing style: Lure fishing is recommended (simpler than bait fishing)
  • Target fish: Iwana (char) and Yamame (trout) — both put up a strong, fun fight
  • Difficulty: ★★ (beginner-friendly)
  • Season opens: Typically April 1 (through around autumn)
  • Fishing permit: Day pass ¥1,000 (Oguni Town Fisheries Cooperative)

The moment you step into the stream, the beauty of it hits you first. The water is so clear you can see every stone on the riverbed — the kind of untouched scenery you simply don’t find in the city. Every time I cast the lure, there’s this jolt of “maybe this time,” and that alone makes it worth doing.

  • 8:00 AM Leave the hotel and head to the fishing area
  • 8:30 AM–12:00 PM Stream fishing (Arakawa river system)
  • 12:30 PM Lunch at a nearby diner, then relax by the river
  • 2:00 PM Drive to central Yamagata City (about 2 hours)
  • 5:30 PM Check in at Super Hotel Yamagata and hit the hot spring

Day 3: Wrapping Up with Yamagata Food and a Natural Hot Spring

Debuya Shokudo: A Shockingly Cheap Lunch

For lunch on the final day, I stopped by “Debuya Shokudo” in Nan’yo City, Yamagata. The name alone had me curious, but walking in was an even bigger surprise. Every dish is ¥500 (extra-large portion +¥100) — an absolutely ruthless level of value.

The place fills up with local regulars around lunchtime. Getting a hearty, filling set meal for just ¥500 is easy on the wallet while traveling, and it also makes you appreciate just how rich Yamagata’s food culture really is.

  • Every dish ¥500 (extra-large portion +¥100)
  • Hours: 11:00 AM–1:30 PM / 6:00 PM–11:00 PM (Mon–Fri)
  • Closed: Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays
  • Address: 1135 Kunugizuka, Nan’yo, Yamagata

Super Hotel Yamagata Ekinishiguchi: The Natural Hot Spring “Hanakasa no Yu”

For lodging, I picked “Super Hotel Yamagata Ekinishiguchi.” Even though it’s a business hotel, its biggest draw is the free natural hot spring “Hanakasa no Yu.” It’s the perfect way to wash off the fatigue of the trip.

  1. Natural hot spring “Hanakasa no Yu” – Unlimited soaks from 3:00 PM until 9:30 AM the next morning
  2. Free breakfast buffet – 6:30 AM–9:00 AM (packed with local dishes like Yamagata rice and imoni stew)
  3. Welcome bar – 3:00 PM–9:00 PM (free drinks right after check-in)

Sinking into the hot spring the day after using your whole body for stream fishing — that alone was enough to make me think, “I’m so glad I came.” The imoni stew at the breakfast buffet was the perfect finishing touch, and it tasted exactly like Yamagata.

Wrap-Up: A Tohoku Trip Packed with Real Experiences

Getting hooked by Kitakata ramen, unwinding in nature at the stream, and relaxing in a hot spring — these three days deliver a trip that really feels like a trip. Instead of stamp-rallying between tourist spots, the whole course is built around eating, fishing, and soaking, and that makes for a completely different level of satisfaction.

Stream fishing in particular is an experience where “just being there” has value, regardless of how many fish you catch. Standing by a clear mountain stream and casting a lure is, by itself, more than enough to become a trip memory worth keeping. If you want to soak up Tohoku’s nature and food in one go, I’d love for you to give this course a try.
