I first came across Totopia Brewery‘s beer purely by chance at BEERKICHI in Fukuoka. From the very first sip it had that irresistibly dank character that Hazy IPA fans can’t get enough of — fruity, yet packing real punch, and dangerously easy to drink. I couldn’t stop thinking, “I have to drink this straight from the tap at the source!” so I made the trip out to the brewery in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture.

Bottom line: going was absolutely the right call. Fresh Hazy IPA straight from the tap was on a completely different level from what I’d tasted out of a can. In this article, I’ll share the whole experience — what makes Totopia Brewery special, the beer styles on offer, and how to get there.

What Is Totopia Brewery?

Totopia Brewery is a small-batch craft brewery founded in 2022 in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture.

The brand name is a coined blend of two words: “Toto,” the region’s historical nickname meaning “the ceramics capital,” and “Utopia,” meaning an ideal world. It reflects both respect for the local land and a desire to create an ideal world through beer.

It’s run by ATOWA, a company that also operates beer pubs in Nagoya, and its goal goes beyond simply selling beer — it aims to spread craft beer culture itself.

What Makes Totopia Brewery’s Beer Special

The concept behind Totopia Brewery’s beer is to express a range of different worlds using generous amounts of hops, fresh fruit, and botanicals. That creativity shows in the beer names too, with a unique naming sense built around suffixes like “〇〇phobia” (fear of) and “〇〇philia” (love of).

Their main lineup covers four core styles.

The taproom always has eight beers on tap, but the lineup changes with the seasons and brewing schedule. Meeting a different beer every time you visit is part of what makes going to the brewery so much fun.

My Honest Impressions After Tasting

Naturally, I went for the Hazy IPA. I’d already been impressed drinking it from a can, but tasting it freshly poured at the taproom topped even that.

The moment it hits your mouth, an aroma bursts open like mango and tropical fruit. True to the name “Hazy,” its cloudy look could pass for fruit juice. But it’s not just the aroma — there’s real hop punch backing it up too. That balance of “easy to drink, yet still substantial” is, I think, exactly what Totopia Brewery does best.

A glass runs around 1,000 to 1,150 yen. Compared to craft beer bars in Tokyo, and considering you’re drinking it right at the brewery, I found it to be excellent value.

The owner was really friendly and told me all kinds of things about the beer. Hearing explanations like, “It’s this particular hop that gives it that aroma,” doubles the fun before you’ve even taken a sip.

The Taproom Atmosphere

You’ll also find a lineup you won’t see anywhere else.

The taproom is a clean, white-toned space that still feels warm and inviting. Set amid lush greenery, the white building is stylish even from the outside.

I heard that craft beer fans often make the trip out from as far as Tokyo and Osaka, and sure enough, when I visited there were customers from far away as well as locals. The atmosphere is welcoming enough for beginners to walk in without hesitation, so it’s a great fit for anyone who wants to learn more about craft beer.

Totopia Brewery’s Sustainability Efforts

I learned that they provide spent grain (used malt left over from brewing) to local farmers as fertilizer. Seeing brewing connected directly to local agriculture like this felt like a wonderful example of community-circular craftsmanship.

That commitment to giving back to the community through craft beer, I think, is part of what makes the brand feel so trustworthy.

I think Totopia Brewery is a place that makes you fall even more in love with Hazy IPA. It’s already delicious from a can, but fresh from the tap at the taproom, it blows that experience out of the water.

It’s a small brewery that only opens on weekends, but the quality is good enough that people make the trip from as far as Tokyo and Osaka. If you ever find yourself in Aichi’s Nagakute, it’s well worth stopping by.
