It’s about four and a half hours from Ebetsu to Hakodate — way too long to treat as “just a drive.” Roadside stations, Mt. Yotei, a river, a hot spring, a bookstore — once I started building in detours, the drive itself became the whole point of the trip.

① Michi-no-Eki Akaigawa: The Perfect Rest Stop Before Niseko
Michi-no-Eki Akaigawa sits along the way from Sapporo/Ebetsu toward Niseko. It’s stocked with plenty of local products, making it a great spot for a bathroom break and a quick look at the souvenirs.
② The Mt. Yotei Viewpoint and the Shiribetsu River: Scenery and Stream Fishing in One Stop
Once you enter the Niseko area, Mt. Yotei rises straight ahead of you. Nicknamed “Ezo Fuji” for its cone-shaped silhouette, it’s an overwhelming sight on a clear day — the kind of view that makes you pull over just to take a photo.
With Mt. Yotei still in view, I headed to the nearby Shiribetsu River. The Niseko area is a popular stream-fishing spot, with white-spotted char and brown trout both on the table. Late March is still before the snowmelt properly kicks in, though, so the water was running high — I kept things to a scouting trip this time.
③ Hakodate Tsutaya Books: A Bookstore Built for Lingering, in a League of Its Own
The first place I headed once I got into Hakodate was Hakodate Tsutaya Books. It’s a large complex combining books, lifestyle goods, and a cafe, designed less as somewhere you just buy books and more as somewhere you spend time.

Before checking into my accommodation in Hakodate, I stopped by Kitamihara Onsen. It’s an old-school bathhouse with plenty of local regulars, but the quality of the hot spring water is the real deal — it melts away the fatigue of a long drive almost instantly.

Taking the expressway (Doou Expressway to Hakodate Expressway), figure on about 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours. If you detour through Niseko, Michi-no-Eki Akaigawa, and the Mt. Yotei area, that stretches to 5–6 hours. To avoid wearing yourself out, leave early in the morning and take proper breaks at the roadside stations along the way.
