Ebetsu Sightseeing Guide: A Day Trip Featuring Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu, Tsutaya Books, Udon, and Hot Springs
Hey everyone! It’s Yagi!
Squeezing in a little detour between fishing trips is kind of my thing. This time, as the second installment of my Ebetsu series,
✅ Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu
✅ Ebetsu Tsutaya Books
✅ Incredible udon at Hana-akari
✅ Kita no Tamayura Onsen
I’ll be introducing all of these. It’s the perfect detour route for anyone who wants to slow down on a trip and let their curiosity wander!
🚗 Hokuou no Kaze Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu: A Nordic Breeze on the Road

Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu sits about 40 minutes by car from Sapporo. It’s a popular road station with plenty of parking space, making it well-suited for car camping too. There’s a 7-Eleven on-site, and the restrooms are kept spotless. I’ve put together the full details and a facility report in a separate article.

📚 Ebetsu Tsutaya Books: A Healing Space Where Books and Lifestyle Blend

Here we are: Ebetsu Tsutaya Books. There are about four buildings like this one. The complex is split into three areas — Food, Knowledge, and Lifestyle — each with its own distinct atmosphere. This was originally a fishing trip, but since I had plenty of time on my hands this time, I let myself properly enjoy the detour. Honestly, I might like these aimless side-trips even more than the main event. There’s always something exciting about the things that happen on a trip with no fixed purpose, when you’re just following your curiosity. I’ve put together a full report on the Knowledge and Lifestyle areas, with photos, in a separate article.

Concept
Their house-made udon, crafted from a homemade blend of Ebetsu-grown wheat,
has a satisfying bite along with a smooth, chewy texture.
A dashi broth made with sardines, kelp, and bonito flakes brings out all that flavor even more.
① Made over two full days, with care at every step
② A carefully selected original blend, mainly using Ebetsu-grown wheat
③ Uses nigari salt from the Bisan Seto strait to enhance the texture
④ Made generously with Hokkaido-grown kelp and several kinds of dried fish flakes
It’s a naturally mineral-rich broth. No artificial seasonings or preservatives are used at all.

Their classic hot udon

A rice bowl dish

I ordered the tempura rice bowl and udon set.
I personally love soft, tender udon, so this hit the spot exactly. The chewy noodles and rich broth made for a blissful moment. I don’t usually order tempura rice bowls, but the person next to me was eating one that looked so good I had to order it too — and it was absolutely the right call! If you love udon, this is a place you have to visit.
There are plenty of great udon shops out there, but the amount of care that goes into the noodles here, plus the fact that no preservatives are used at all, really stands out. A meal made with this much care and attention has a gentle flavor that fills you up, body and soul! It’s the kind of udon that’s worth going out of your way for if you’re ever in Hokkaido.

This is heaven for udon lovers~!
🛁 Kita no Tamayura Onsen: A Well-Earned Soak in Ebetsu

- Hours: 8:00-25:00
- Price: Adults 500 yen
- Notes: Shampoo and body soap provided

They stop the water and clean everything, every single day!?

And yet they’re open for this many hours!?

And on top of that, this price?

Wait, what even is a price hike again? (lol)

Your skin comes out silky smooth

The hair dryers are coin-operated!
I made my way to “Kita no Tamayura,” just a short distance from Tsutaya Books and Hana-akari. They clean far more often than the hygiene standards require, so the place feels spotless. And then there’s how long it stays open — longer than most izakayas in the area, honestly (lol). I have to wonder when the staff actually sleep.
And then there’s the price. They announced a price increase — and it turned out to be a whopping 10 yen. It’s so reasonable in every sense that it’s almost concerning how kind this pricing is. What a gentle world this is. I love Hokkaido way too much. There’s no manga here, but the lounge area is spacious and there’s a place to eat, so it looks like a decent spot to get some laptop work done too.
- What are the highlights of Hokuou no Kaze Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu?
-
It’s a road station in Tobetsu Town with a striking Nordic-style exterior. It has a great selection of local produce and specialty goods, making it an ideal rest stop partway through a drive. It also opens early in the morning, so it’s easy to swing by right at the start of your trip.
- What kind of bookstore is Ebetsu Tsutaya Books? How is it different from a regular Tsutaya?
-
It’s an experience-driven bookstore built around the concept of “books and lifestyle.” The space is integrated with a cafe, so you can take your time browsing, and it has a strong lineup of lifestyle books covering interior design, food, and the outdoors. It’s designed less as a place to shop and more as a place to spend time, so you can comfortably linger for a while.
- What’s the recommended menu at Washokuya Hana-akari?
-
Udon is the signature dish, and the tempura rice bowl and udon set is especially popular. The chewy noodles and the dashi are perfectly balanced, and it’s a reliable spot with plenty of local regulars. Lunchtime can get crowded, so visiting a little earlier is recommended.
- What are the price and features of Kita no Tamayura Onsen?
-
It’s a spa facility popular with locals as a well-earned treat in Ebetsu. It has a spacious bath, a sauna, and an open-air bath, and it can get crowded on weekends. Admission for adults runs in the 700-800 yen range (varies by season), and towels are available for rent. It’s the kind of place you can comfortably spend two to three hours.
Summary
That wraps up this look at the area around Ebetsu. The main goal was Tsutaya Books, but exploring the surrounding area turned up all kinds of discoveries. The restaurants and hot spring let you soak up the local atmosphere, which makes them perfect for a once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip!
If you’re ever heading to Sapporo, be sure to make a stop in Ebetsu! Thanks so much for reading all the way to the end.
