First stop was Ajidokoro Ichi, a diner in the Nopporo area of Ebetsu. It’s an old-school neighborhood eatery that fills up with regulars around lunchtime.
I ordered the Zangi teishoku (five extra-large pieces of Zangi). Hokkaido-style Zangi isn’t just fried chicken — it’s soaked through with a sweet-savory soy-based sauce, with a crispy coating and juicy meat inside. It goes perfectly with rice.
I used to wonder what actually separates Zangi from regular fried chicken, but the moment I took a bite, I understood. It’s a different thing entirely. If you’re in Hokkaido, this should be the first thing you eat.

After lunch, I headed to the Ishikari River’s main stream. Both banks were covered in snow, and parts of the water’s surface were thinly frozen. I tried several spots, but got no bites that day. Fishing the main stream in Hokkaido in March turns out to be a pretty tough reality.

The horumon teishoku (grilled offal set meal) for around 800 yen was amazing. Horumon teishoku plus unlimited manga after a hot spring soak — honestly, is there a better day off than that? (lol)
